LOS ANGELES — California has become the first U.S. state to record 2 million confirmed coronavirus cases.A tally by Johns Hopkins University on Thursday morning showed the nation’s most populous state has a total of 2,010,157 infections. There have been more than 23,000 deaths. The grim milestone comes as the COVID-19 crisis that health officials say stems from Thanksgiving gatherings strains California’s medical system. More than 18,000 people are hospitalized and many of the state’s intensive care units are filled. Mobile field hospitals are being erected in several places around California to handle the overflow of patients. The California Department of Public Health this week declared that the two Southern California regions, encompassing Los Angeles, San Diego, Fresno, Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley had 0% ICU bed availability. 859

佛山鼻子变大,LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lawyers for a church with more than 160 congregations across California say they will seek an immediate court order allowing indoor worship after the Supreme Court told a lower federal court to reexamine state coronavirus restrictions on church services. The victory Thursday for Pasadena-based Harvest Rock Church and Harvest International Ministry follows a recent high court ruling in favor of churches and synagogues in New York. “The bottom line result is that where the court needs to go is inevitable,” said Attorney Mathew Staver, who represents the church. “What the court did last week and what they did today, it’s a whole new landscape and I think they’ve telegraphed quite clearly the direction they’re going.”RELATED: San Diego County issues COVID-19 outbreak notices for two more Awaken Church locationsThe Supreme Court order came the day after restaurants gained some traction in their challenge to a Los Angeles County ban on outdoor dining. The cases represent rare gains in legal challenges of COVID-19 regulations. 1062

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge has ordered the release of a Southern California man who spent 19 years in prison for a gang-related shooting. The judge on Friday approved a re-sentencing request from prosecutors for Emon Barnes. The 34-year-old Compton man is expected to be freed next week. Barnes was 15 when he was arrested for a Compton shooting. He was sentenced to 40 years to life for attempted murder. Barnes says he was home with his mother at the time of the shooting. A victim who identified him has since recanted. His attorneys say they will try to have his conviction vacated. 594

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A third Los Angeles police officer has tested positive for the coronavirus and was exhibiting symptoms inside the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Division station for several days this week, according to the department. The officer, who had recently returned from a vacation out of the country, was "coughing and sweating" during roll call in Central Division, which patrols areas that include downtown L.A., two of the officials said.Despite protests from several officers in the station, the affected officer was allowed to work for at least two days this week, according to the Los Angeles Times. The officer was tested for the virus, and a positive result came back Saturday, according to three law enforcement officials. Additional officers who worked with the afflicted patrol officer were expected to be quarantined, officials said.Saturday night, the LAPD reported that it had disinfected all of the officer's work spaces and common areas inside Central Division."We have also identified anyone who may have come into contact with the employee and directed them to contact their healthcare provider for evaluation," the LAPD reported. The department said it also established guidelines for all employees who either exhibit symptoms of the virus or cone in contact with someone who may be infected. However, the LAPD has not yet released those guidelines. 1395

佛山鼻子变大,LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mayor Eric Garcetti didn't create the city's homeless crisis, but he owns it.The two-term Democrat who not long ago flirted with a presidential run has been besieged by complaints about homeless encampments that have gotten so widespread he's facing a potential recall campaign. The low-key mayor who in 2016 helped convince voters to borrow .2 billion to construct housing for the homeless has found himself forced to explain why the problems have only gotten worse.Figures released earlier this month showed a 16% jump in LA's homeless population over the last year, pegging it at 36,300 — the size of a small city. That's no surprise to anyone who lives or works in downtown Los Angeles, where tents crowd sidewalks within sight of City Hall and the stench of urine is unmistakable. The homeless crisis has become "a state of emergency," said Alexandra Datig, who is leading the recall effort. It's not clear if the recall effort will succeed — the threshold to reach the ballot requires over 300,000 voter signatures. It nonetheless represents at least a symbolic statement about public unrest with the growing homeless problem. 1157
